Surprise yesterday at the men’s tournament of the Australian Open: world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz had to admit his superior to number 7 Alexander Zverev. The German won in 4 sets: 6-1, 6-3, 6-7 and 6-4.
“Zverev played a great match,” Carlos Alcaraz responded sportingly. “He started as I expected: with aggressive tennis.”
“I missed my start again,” the world number 2 continues. “I made a lot of mistakes, my serve wasn’t running and I couldn’t find any speed.”
“I’m only 20 years old, it’s logical that I still have to take steps,” Alcaraz analyzes. “Definitely mentally.”
“If I still want to win Grand Slam tournaments, I have to work on it.”
The Australian Open will not have a final between Djokovic and Alcaraz. Last year the young Spaniard defeated the grandmaster in the Wimbledon final.
“All players in the semi-finals can beat him,” Alcaraz thinks, “but that is not easy. Certainly not at a Grand Slam tournament.”
The Italian Jannik Sinner can try in the semi-finals.
“Sinner is playing at an incredible level. He has not lost a set yet. I think he is capable of surprising Novak. I will definitely watch,” promises Alcaraz.
