Farmacias del Dr. Simi Launches ‘Safe Disposal Point’ Initiative to Tackle Medication Pollution

In response to one of the least addressed environmental problems worldwide, Farmacias del Dr. Simi launched “Safe Disposal Point”, an important initiative that will allow the capital’s population to dispose of expired and/or unused medications at collection points enabled within 10 pharmacies in the Metropolitan Region.

The project was presented this Wednesday, January 24, together with representatives of the company and important guests from the public and private sector, such as the mayor of Vitacura Camila Merino, members of the Metropolitan Regional Government, Bosko, Mapocho Vivo, SuperBee and Dr. Aiko Adell , who referred to the problem from her experience as a researcher on this topic.

So far, this social responsibility action will be implemented first in the communes of Huechuraba, Macul, Maipú, La Florida, Las Condes, San Bernardo, Santiago and Vitacura.

The main objective of this measure is to prevent medications from being discarded through the sewage and garbage, a means by which they are released into the environment, generating a particular chain of effects that contaminate water, soil, flora and fauna. In addition to contributing to one of the main challenges we face as a society: antimicrobial resistance (loss of effectiveness in medications).

For this reason, Farmacias del Dr. Simi invites people to participate in this initiative, depositing their expired, damaged or unused medications in the authorized containers, given that the support of the population is essential to reduce pollution derived from Inappropriate disposal of drugs at home.

This effort is part of the initiative SíMiPlaneta, a movement of Dr. Simi’s Pharmacies that materializes its deep ecological commitment through conservation and environmental care strategies.
