Donald Trump Defamation Trial Resumes in New York Amid Presidential Primary Victory

(New York) The defamation trial filed by an author against Donald Trump resumes Thursday in New York in the presence of the former President of the United States who is due to testify there, on the strength of his victory in the Republican primaries in New Hampshire.

The businessman and political tribune, who is edging closer to a November presidential rematch against Joe Biden, returned to New York on Wednesday evening and left his Trump Tower in Manhattan on Thursday morning to enter the courthouse from the south of the New York island, according to an AFP photographer.

Since January 16, this civil trial has opposed a former columnist for the American edition of the magazine ElleElizabeth Jean Carroll, 80 years old, to Donald Trump, 77 years old, whom she has already ordered in civil court in May 2023 to pay five million dollars in damages for sexual assault in 1996 and, for the first time, for defamation.

Commuting for eight days between his campaign rallies in the states of Iowa and New Hampshire and the federal court in New York, the former tenant of the White House, who dreams of returning there and leaves strengthened by his victories in the primaries of January 15 and 23, must testify Thursday to defend himself.

This hearing was canceled Monday due to suspicion of COVID-19 by a juror and a lawyer, and postponed several times until Thursday.

Wednesday evening, on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump launched no less than 37 attacks against his complainant E. Jean Carroll, whom he has continued to denigrate and insult for months by calling her “crazy”, “phony story”, which he has “never seen in (his) life”.

And this despite a first resounding verdict in May unanimously by a popular jury of the same New York civil federal court, judging him responsible for “sexual assault” and defamation.

This second trial, which is not an appeal hearing, arises from a defamation complaint from the writer and former journalist for statements made by Mr. Trump in June 2019, when she had accused him for the first times of rape in a book.

Then President of the United States (2017-2021), he claimed that the woman who was “not his type” had invented everything to “sell a new book”. The procedure had been delayed, but this second trial was maintained.

The plaintiff claims more than ten million dollars for moral and professional damage.

Donald Trump is also targeted, in this election year, by four criminal cases.
