The Spaniard did not live up to expectations and was unable to express himself
Last week Barcelona lost the Super Cup title after surrendering 4:1 to Real Madrid in the final in Riyadh, tonight (Wednesday) the Spanish champions ended their journey with another feat. Xavi’s apprentices were already eliminated from the King’s Cup at the quarter-final stage after a 4:2 loss to Athletic Bilbao at San Mames in the quarter-finals.
Barcelona came to the match at San Mames with the 4:1 loss to Real in the Super Cup being the only loss in the last six games. Xavi’s apprentices, who have not shown much ability in recent times, hoped to continue the momentum from the 2:4 victory over Betis, but this time they are the ones who suffered a painful fourth.
Bilbao, on the other hand, entered the competition after their six-game winning streak was stopped with a 1:0 loss to Valencia in the last game. The team of Ernesto Valverde, who won the cup with Barcelona in the 2017/18 season, showed superiority in most phases of the game and absolutely deservedly got the ticket to the last four of the factory.

The game opened with something that Barca has become accustomed to – falling behind early. A loss of Lamin Yamal on the wing led to a transition attack, at the end of which Gorka Gorosta scored from close range and put his team in the lead after 36 seconds. It was the third time this season that a champion conceded after less than a minute of the opening.
The Catalans struggled to recover from the shock and were not close to the host’s goal, which gave them a gift in the 26th minute. Barchica tried to keep away and kicked powerfully, but the kick hit Robert Lewandowski and returned to the net. Six minutes passed, Lamin Yamal converted with a tremendous slalom goal and reduced the Catalans to half time with the lead.
The poor defensive ability of Xavi’s players at the start of the half continued in the second as well. Four minutes after returning from the dressing rooms, Nico Williams charged towards Ovian Sunset who hit from close range to tie the score. Lamin Yamal Kawi made two huge misses after that and the game went to overtime.
Barcelona was non-existent offensively in extra time, while the hosts scored Ignacy Pena’s goal. The Basques took a well-deserved lead in the 105th minute when substitute Ignacy Williams scored from close range and completed a turnaround. His brother, Nico, signed with a tremendous goal in the 120th minute and sent Bilbao to the semi-finals.
