After one empire, it was the turn of the other. After Real Madrid was eliminated in the round of 16 in the derby against Atlético, tonight (between Wednesday and Thursday) it was Barcelona’s turn – the Spanish champions were defeated 4:2 against Athletic Bilbao at “San Mames”, ending their journey in the King’s Cup at the quarter-final stage. Xavi’s apprentices surrendered two late goals in overtime to the “Williams Brothers” – and will be forced to concentrate on the league.
On the other hand, Athletic Bilbao continues to mark itself as a “typical cup team” – it is in the semi-finals for the fifth year in a row, but is still looking for its first win since the 1983/84 season (this year the win will be celebrated 40). Ernesto Valverde’s side have recovered well from the loss to Valencia on Saturday and will once again be among the old factory’s top four.
Bilbao qualified for the semi-finals tonight, along with Mallorca who beat Girona 2:3 in the corresponding match. In doing so, she joins Real Sociedad, who beat Celta Vigo 1:2 away the other day (Tuesday). The identity of the fourth newcomer will be determined tonight (Thursday), when Atlético Madrid meets Sevilla.
first half
A dream opening for the host, when after less than a minute, Gorosta took advantage of a mix-up in the box and gave Bilbao an early lead. Gorosota could have completed an incredible double in the 6th minute, but missed from the center of the box and sent the ball over the goal. As early as the 22nd minute, Balde had to leave due to an injury and 17-year-old Hector Fort entered in his place. Four minutes later, and in her first dangerous attack of the game, Robert Lewandowski equalized when a ball Barcacha tried to keep away hit him and entered the net.
Barcelona began to gain confidence, Bilbao disappeared, and in the 32nd minute the turnaround was complete. Lamin Yamel, with a brilliant individual performance, hung on his player and sent a sharp ball into the corner. 1:2 great for the Catalans. In the 36th minute Lewandowski received a good ball in the box, but from a difficult angle he only managed to get a corner. After a long time without going forward, Bilbao again threatened the goal in the 42nd minute, but a save by Penaeh prevented them from equalizing.

In the 80th minute, Sunset could have completed a personal double, but at the end of a quick burst, he sent the ball over the goal.
