The home of Surinamese Health Minister Amar Ramadhin was shot at on Tuesday night (local time). No one was injured. The government is taking into account the possibility of a targeted attack.
A man on a bicycle fired at least nine shots and then fled, a government-employed guard said. There is no trace of the suspect.
Five bullets hit Ramadhin’s balcony. There was also a bullet impact in a car on the property. Police found a total of nine shell casings. “Luckily no one was hit, everyone is safe,” Ramadhin responded to the incident to Radio ABC Suriname. “It is of course a serious matter and they did not hesitate to shoot at the house.”
The Surinamese government strongly disapproves of the attack and sees it as “a serious attack on the functioning of the rule of law and governance”. Instructions have been issued to security forces to immediately increase security.
Nothing is yet clear about the motive for the shootings. The government is seriously considering the possibility of a targeted attack on the administration, “particularly at the address of Minister Aman Ramadhin”.
“In my opinion, we should not take this lightly,” Ramadhin said. The minister says he has no idea from which angle the shelling could come. The minister is a member of President Chan Santokhi’s party. Before becoming minister in 2020, he worked as a general practitioner. The police are investigating the case, but could not yet provide any additional information.
