The construction of a “defense line” by the Baltic countries, within which Estonia intends to build 600 bunkers on the border with Russia, is not associated with a real threat of war. This was stated in an interview with the Postimees portal by the country’s Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkur.
“We have no real threat. If we are talking about bunkers, this does not mean that there will be a war,” Pevkur said, as quoted by TASS.
It is noted that the interview took place in video format, and the minister spoke in Russian.
According to him, Estonia is going to start building bunkers in the coming months.
“In May-June we would like to start building the first [бункеры]. Then everything will depend on how quickly we can obtain the consent of the owners [земли]”, the minister noted. If necessary, anti-tank barriers can be installed on the “defense line,” but the authorities of the Baltic countries are not yet considering other measures to strengthen the border.
How it was conveyed EADaily, the Baltic countries agreed to create a common defense zone on their borders with Russia. This was reported by the Estonian Ministry of Defense.
The corresponding agreement was signed in Riga by the defense ministers of the Baltic countries. It provides, in particular, for the construction of a network of strongholds and sentinel posts. “In peacetime, explosives, clearings and other obstacles should not be placed in the security zone, and a network of strongholds and sentinel posts should be created,” the document says.
