A preliminary investigation of the disaster reveals that a combined force of infantry, engineering and armor from the 8208 reserve battalion arrived yesterday morning from the Kissofim sector for the task of clearing the area in the buffer strip. The fighters located ten two-story buildings at a distance of about 600 meters from the border, on the Gaza side, which they were assigned to destroy. With the help of an engineering company, the fighters capture the buildings in preparation for their explosion, while the armored and infantry forces secure their activities. At around 16:00 a terrorist approached the place, not identified, and fired an RPG missile at the tank that secured the operation. As a result, two fighters were killed in the tank and two others were wounded.
Another anti-tank missile was launched at two adjacent houses where dozens of fighters were staying, and its explosion caused the activation of bombs that were used by the fighters to destroy the buildings. The explosions led to the complete collapse of both buildings.
Following the declaration of an AR (major casualty incident), large IDF forces were rushed to the scene for rescue operations.
