FC Twente is in danger of losing Manfred Ugalde to Spartak Moscow. The club from Russia has registered for the striker in Enschede, a spokesperson for the number three in the Eredivisie confirms to the ANP news agency.
The 21-year-old Ugalde is having a strong season. With seven goals and six assists, he is one of the trendsetters in De Grolsch Veste. The attacker from Costa Rica is under contract with FC Twente until mid-2027.
Ugalde can become a teammate of Quincy Promes at Spartak Moscow. The former international of the Dutch national team has been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison in the Netherlands for a stabbing at a family party. According to the Public Prosecution Service, Promes also had a ‘guiding role’ in the smuggling of two shipments of cocaine that entered the port of Antwerp in 2020.
PSV also did business with Spartak Moscow in the summer of 2022 and brought Guus Til to Eindhoven. According to Follow the Money, a platform for investigative journalism, the club from Eindhoven, like dozens of other European clubs, runs the risk of violating sanctions against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. PSV denies this and points to the fact that no Spartak Moscow stakeholders are on a blacklist.
Oil company Lukoil is the owner of Spartak Moscow and is not on the EU sanctions list, because oil and gas companies from Russia are an exception due to the European energy supply. However, Lukoil is on the American sanctions list.
Ugalde, who is in his third year of football at FC Twente, would be the first player to leave Enschede this winter. Twente took him over from Belgian Lommel SK last summer. The attacker already played for two seasons on loan at De Grolsch Veste before the summer.
