New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman Talks 2024 Training Start & Injury Comebacks

The general manager of the New York Yankees, Brian Cashman spoke this Tuesday about the start of the team’s training in TampaFlorida, in which he offered details of what the rotation will be for the 2024 Major League season, especially pitchers Néstor Cortés and Carlos Rodón.

Doubts about the physical condition of Cortés and Rodón, and especially about what they could contribute in 2024 taking into account that the previous season they performed poorly than expected due to physical problems and injuries, but Cashman made sure to confirm that both arms left their bad moments behind them.

“I think we have a good rotation if everything goes well, which is something you don’t want to get too confident in,” Cashman said.

The manager indicated that They received Cortés and Rodón in advance and long before February 14, the original date of the beginning of the practicesand that they will find themselves working with the team’s trainers to refine details so that they can recover both level and confidence.

In fact, Cashman stopped to comment on the situation of Cortés, who in 2022 was one of the Yankees’ most important pitchers, even attending the All-Star Game, and that is why they want to have him.

We know what Nestor is capable of when he is healthy. He was an All-Star and a high-level piece for us before injuries affected him last year, so we are looking forward to getting that player back,” he added.

In 2023 Cortés left a record of 5-2 but despite having finished with a positive record, the left-hander had an earned run percentage of 4.97 in 12 games, while Rodón finished 3-8 with a 6.85 ERA in 14 games; Both missed more than three months of action due to various injuries.

The recovery of Cortés and Rodón for 2024 will be essential for the Mules in order to define a rotation that will be led by the American League Cy Young, Gerrit Cole, as well as the addition of free agent Marcus Stroman, along with other pitchers such as Clarke Schmidt and Luke Weaver.

New York Yankees training also started early for other players

Cortés and Rodón were not the only ones who showed up early to the Yankees’ training camps, after captain Aaron Judge and slugger DJ LeMahieu were seen taking batting practice and working with the coaching staff.

Likewise, the Venezuelans Oswaldo Cabrera and Gleyber Torres, the Nicaraguan Jonathan Loaisiga, the Americans Anthony Volpe and Austen Wells and the Dominican Jasson Domínguez, the latter recovering from Tommy John surgery, were also present at the practices.

As the days go by, other important players such as Giancarlo Stanton, Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo or Oswald Peraza could also join.

It is believed that the early additions are part of the plan of the team management and the players to have a better season than the one they had in 2023, where physical problems and injuries caused the Yankees to finish the season with a record of 82- 80, in fourth position in the American League East Division and without a chance to reach the postseason.
