Professor Marek Safjan leaves the position of CJEU judge

“The General Assembly of Judges of the CJEU agreed to his resignation before the new judge took up his position. Professor Marek Safjan has been a judge of the Court of Justice since October 7, 2009,” we read in the press release.

In the years 1991–1998, Marek Safjan taught law at the University of Warsaw. In the years 1994–1997 he held the office of vice-rector of this university.

In 1997, he was appointed a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal, and in 1998 he became the president of this institution. He remained in this position until 2006. Three years later he stayed judge of the CJEU.

The Court of Justice of the European Union ensures that EU law is interpreted uniformly in all Member States and that it is respected by EU countries and institutions. It consists of 27 judges who are appointed by common accord by EU governments for a renewable six-year term.
