Democratic Congressman Dean Phillips Challenges Joe Biden in Primary as DNC Faces Accusations of Voter Suppression
In a surprising turn of events, Democratic Congressman Dean Phillips has thrown his hat into the ring, challenging Joe Biden in the Democratic primary. Representing Minnesota’s 3rd congressional district since 2019, Phillips has emerged as a formidable opponent, garnering 32% of likely Democratic voters’ support in New Hampshire during his ten-week campaign.
Phillips, a firm believer in competition over coronation, expressed his motivation for entering the race. “I felt compelled in the absence of any better known candidates entering the stage to compete for the Democratic nomination against Joe Biden,” the 55-year-old entrepreneur stated. Speaking from the campaign trail in New Hampshire, Phillips highlighted his commitment to upholding the democratic process and criticized the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for their alleged voter suppression tactics.
Phillips accused the DNC of obstructing the vote by altering the Democratic primary schedule and impeding the engagement of delegates from New Hampshire. The state’s Attorney General even sent a cease-and-desist letter to the DNC, accusing them of unlawful voter suppression. Before entering politics, Phillips was an entrepreneur and co-owner of Talenti Gelato, but his experience in Congress has left him disheartened. Describing Capitol Hill as a “dysfunctional, poorly-led, and unmitigated mess,” Phillips saw an opportunity to offer pragmatic solutions and common sense to the majority of Americans. His role as the vice chair of the Problem Solver’s Caucus and his ranking as the second-most bipartisan member of Congress demonstrate his commitment to cross-partisan cooperation.
