Rising Death Toll in NYC Migrant Shelters: No Crime Suspected in the Death of 3 Month Old Baby Yuleisy Astudillo

No crime is suspected in the death of Yuleisy Astudillo, a three month old baby who was found unconscious by his mother inside a hotel converted into a migrant shelter in Long Island City, Queens (NYC).

Police from New York’s 114th Precinct in Astoria and EMS paramedics responded to a 911 call and responded to the Queens County Inn and Suites at 40-34 Crescent St. Sunday afternoon. The baby was taken to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later, he reported. Astoria Post.

The baby appears to have suffered a cardiac arrest., but the medical examiner has not announced the cause of death. There have been no arrests and detectives’ investigation remains ongoing, according to the NYPD.

A spokesperson for the city’s Department of Social Services (DSS) cited by NBC News confirmed that this hotel is being used as a refuge in the midst of the immigration crisis. “Our deepest condolences go out to everyone who has been affected and we are keen to provide the family with all the support we can during this incredibly difficult time.”

The migration crisis has marked the two years of the administration of the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, in the midst of a national political battle between democrats and republicans. It is estimated that between April 2022 and December 2023, NYC spent approximately $3.5 billion dollars in housing and services for more than 164,500 people who passed through the city’s admission center, sent on buses from Texas.

The situation has strained the city’s shelter system.. According to local government counts, the population of the shelter system went from less than 50,000 in July 2022 to around 120,000 in November.

In September, Mayor Adams declared that the massive arrival of immigrants will “destroy” the city. The situation has caused, in his own words, “Extremely painful” spending cuts that will affect millions of New Yorkers and hamper all city agencies by claiming the lack of resources from Joe Bien’s government.

Last week a 24-year-old man was stabbed in the neck at a mayor-run migrant shelter on Randalls Island. Right there, at the beginning of January, Dafren Alexis Cañizales Ceballo (24) was stabbed to death when he was waiting in line to order food.

In December, an 11-year-old boy died after being found unconscious in a hotel converted into an immigrant shelter on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (NYC).

In May, a 4-month-old newborn died after she was found unconscious in a hotel-turned-shelter in Midtown Manhattan. In June, two young, recently arrived asylum seekers died of an apparent overdose inside a car parked in front of a mega migrant shelter in Brooklyn.

At the end of 2022, a young 26-year-old immigrant who recently arrived in New York took his own life in a shelter in Queens. Was the second case after the suicide of a Colombian immigrant 32-year-old who was awaiting asylum living with her two children in another shelter in Queens.
