5th President of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, turned 77 yesterday. Megawati was sent flowers by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
As reported by Antara, the flowers sent by Jokowi were purple, white roses, candles and baby’s breath. Flowers were sent to Megawati’s residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (23/1/2024).
There was also a short greeting from President Jokowi on the wreath. “Happy birthday, Mrs. Megawati Soekarnoputri. From: President Joko Widodo,” wrote the message on the wreath.
PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto expressed his thanks for the flower delivery. He said he would inform Megawati about Jokowi’s flower delivery.
“We thank you for the flower delivery, we will report it to Mrs. Mega after we have collected the data one by one. Including flowers from President Jokowi, thank you for the flower delivery,” said Hasto in Teuku Umar, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (23/1/ 2024).
Hasto then responded to the news that Jokowi wanted reconciliation with PDIP. Hasto said leaders will not distance themselves from PDIP, as long as they are close to the people.
“As long as the leader is close to the people, prioritizes the interests of the nation and state, rather than interests or family, he will definitely be close, there will definitely be no distance from us,” he explained.
Hasto said that as long as the leader can be close to the people, his party will always open up. Because, he said, PDIP was born from the little people.
“Oh yes (not closing the door sorry), that’s the aim of politics. So we are opening ourselves up to politics by prioritizing the principles of people’s sovereignty,” he said.
“Because this political party is only a tool for the people to express their aspirations,” he added.
Megawati’s birthday celebration was carried out simply. Hasto said that the PDIP Chairman only accepted those closest to him.
“As in previous years, Mrs. Megawati’s birthday was held simply, and was attended by her family and close friends,” said Hasto in his statement.
Not only that, all PDIP cadres in various regions also celebrated Megawati’s birthday with cultural activities. Hasto said his colleagues would distribute tumpeng to the community and plant trees.
Megawati’s Role in Protecting the Constitution
Furthermore, Hasto also reminded Megawati’s role in maintaining Indonesian democracy. He touched on the issue of extending his term of office for three terms which had been raised by people close to Jokowi.
Hasto said that Megawati had the courage to reject the request for an extension of her term of office even though it would have consequences in the 2024 elections. He wanted Megawati’s character in maintaining the constitutional mandate to be used as an example.
“By emulating his struggle, the various intimidations that are currently occurring have actually become a source of encouragement to become stronger in realizing people’s sovereignty as the highest law in determining leaders,” he said.
