Mitchell Weiser Leads Werder Bremen to Long-Awaited Victory Over Bayern Munich

Mitchell Weiser will probably never forget last Sunday. With his second goal of the season, the 29-year-old ensured that Bremen were finally able to win again in Munich after a 15-year drought – a goal that will also give him satisfaction.

Because: The Troisdorf native moved from 1. FC Köln to the record champions in 2012 full of hopes, but was never really able to assert himself there and was temporarily loaned to Kaiserslautern. Nevertheless, it was an opportunity that he had to take, as he himself explained.

In total, in three years, during which he became German champion three times, he made just 21 appearances in the Bayern jersey and moved to Hertha BSC on a free transfer in 2015.

The right-back was incredibly proud that his goal against Bayern ensured victory, as he revealed after the game: “If you score against Bayern and that’s enough to win, of course it’s a different story Theme”.

Weiser a “difference player”

“It was no coincidence that Mitch scored the goal at the end. It was an incredibly strong performance from him both offensively and defensively. Mitchell is a difference player for us,” enthused coach Ole Werner after the game.

However, it’s not just Werder fans who are wondering how long the “difference player” will be active in the green and white jersey, as the 29-year-old’s contract expires in the summer and one can certainly imagine that he is looking for something more exciting in terms of sport than playing for relegation in the Bundesliga.

“Games like today obviously help”

They are currently in discussions, but don’t want to let themselves be stressed, as the former Munich player explained on Sunday evening: “I don’t feel any stress and I still feel very comfortable in Bremen. Of course, games like this help, where I see that the team and everyone around them wants more. That was definitely a good step.”

Weiser moved permanently from Leverkusen to Weser in 2022, but was already on loan to Bremen the year before and has since scored eight goals and 17 assists in 75 games. In the meantime, the former German U21 international caused a stir because he announced that he wanted to play for the Algerian national team.

Will Weiser soon play for Algeria?

The background is that his mother has family connections to Algeria and Weiser saw no chance of being nominated for the DFB team. However, he is keen to play one more major tournament in his career and sees it more likely that he will be selected for Algeria. However, it has not yet been taken into account.

With the unexpected but deserved win against Bayern, Werder was able to gain further breathing room in the relegation battle and is now nine points clear of a direct relegation zone. Next Saturday, the Werder team will certainly want to use the euphoria to get their next win against SC Freiburg.

Maybe Weiser can once again act as a “difference player” with a strong performance.
