How Sound in Games Affects Players: Research Study at Prague’s FAMU

Although some players do not pay as much attention to it as, for example, graphics, sound in games is an undeniable part of the gaming experience and overall immersion. However, how much and in what ways does it affect the player? This question is being asked by a unique research and study taking place at Prague’s FAMU (Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts), where, thanks to the young master’s field of game design, more and more activities focusing on games are taking place. The research is led by educators and sound engineers Tomáš Oramus and Petr Neubauer, who are currently inviting interested parties to participate in the February testing – just come and play Resident Evil Village.

The goal of the research is to answer the question of how sound affects us when playing games and how the experience is affected by different sound formats and methods of sound reproduction – whether the game is played with sound from a television, in a large home theater or with headphones on the head. “This question cannot be answered just from the table, but the best way to get this information is directly while playing, so we decided to organize a rather extensive experiment, for which we need at least 150 participants,” said Tomáš Oramus, who is also the author of the audio games Evidence 111 and Chess game. Anyone over the age of 18 who is at least a casual player can participate in the research. The experiment involves playing a demo of Resident Evil Village on an Xbox Series X console in a professional sound studio while the participant’s heart rate, breathing rate and electrodermal activity are measured, and then completing several short questionnaires. “From this data, we will then evaluate what effect sound has on our experience, but also on our physiological functions, which we cannot consciously influence,” added Oramus.

Testing takes place on premises FAMU studies and participation will take about an hour. It is already possible to register for any of the listed dates between February 5 and February 9, February 19 and February 23 and February 29 and March 1. In addition to the non-traditional experience, participants will also be rewarded with a voucher worth CZK 400. “If you are interested in the issue of sound in games or would like to support research in the field of computer games, do not hesitate to register,” invite the authors. Dates and other information can be found here.
