Alternative for Germany will push for a referendum on Germany’s EU membership if it ever comes to power, its co-chair Alice Weidel has said.
“Alternative for Germany” (AfD) wants to reform the EU and limit the powers of the European Commission, writes Politico.
In an interview with the Financial Times published today, Weidel said that “if the sovereignty of the EU member states cannot be restored, then the citizens must decide, as in Britain”.
By praising the UK for “Brexit” – leaving the EU after the 2016 referendum, Weidel said that, in her opinion, in Germany “a referendum on “Dexit” – Germany’s exit from the EU can be held”.
The AfD has long been an openly anti-European party. Its program states that the EU cannot be reformed and is a failed project.
Despite low levels of support for the EU among the party’s supporters, polls conducted in September 2023 showed that a majority of the AfD’s own voters were unlikely to vote for “Dexit”, with 52% of them favoring remaining in the EU.
According to the Politico survey, the far-right party is in second place in terms of electoral support in Germany scale by 23% and is thriving despite the recent scandal that sparked the country’s biggest anti-far-right protests in decades. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets of Germany on Sunday, with some calling for a total ban on the party.
Last week, a report revealed that some members of the AfD had engaged in a secret meeting with neo-Nazis and other extremists to discuss “remigration” – short for the deportation of asylum seekers, migrants and even German citizens with a migrant background who failed to are integrated. Weidel fires an employee who attended the meeting.
