On the 27th there will be another special film event in the Zebra Cinema. The Berlin director Ayşe Polat and the producer Janna Heine, who now lives in Konstanz, will be guests at the screening of the film “Im dead Winkel” and will be available for a discussion with the audience afterwards.
Strange incidents overshadow the filming of a German film team in northeastern Turkey: In a Kurdish village, an old woman uses a ritual to keep the memory of her son, who disappeared 25 years ago, alive. The Kurdish interpreter Leyla, who is also a tutor for the Turkish girl Melek, is on site. When the child is haunted by mysterious visions, her father Zafer puts himself in mortal danger out of fear for his family: little Melek seems to have supernatural access to the crimes committed by her ancestors against the Kurds in Turkey.
The fateful encounter between these people develops a destructive power. A gripping political mystery thriller unfolds in three chapters and told from multiple perspectives. “In the Blind Spot” celebrated its premiere in the Encounters section of the Berlinale 2023 about a year ago.
The director
Following the screening on January 27th, 2024 at 8:35 p.m., the Kurdish-German director Ayşe Polat will be available for a discussion with the audience together with film producer Janna Heine. The Zebra Cinema in the Chérisy barracks is looking forward to the visit of Ms Polat, one of the first and most important representatives of the so-called “German-Turkish cinema” since the 90s. She studied German, philosophy and cultural studies in Berlin and Bremen from 1991 to 1993. She began her career in the 1990s with a series of successful short films. In 1991 she received the sponsorship award from the Federal Youth and Video Competition for her debut short film.
She celebrated her feature film debut in 1999 with “Foreign Tour”. The film was shown at film festivals in Karlovy Vary and Tokyo and won the award for best directorial debut in Ankara. Her second film “En Garde” (2004) opened the Locarno Film Festival and received the Silver Leopard for Best Film and Best Actress. Polat also worked as a co-producer on some of her films – such as “Luks Glück” (2010), “The Heiress” (2013) and the documentary “The Others” (2015). In 2006, Polat also staged her first theater work “Otobüs” at the Berlin Theater Hebbel am Ufer. She often deals with topics such as the search for identity and the loss of identity.
