Vaccination serves the population aged 65 and 80 without an appointment at health centers
Villena registered 120 cases of this disabling disease during 2023
Villena, January 22.- Villena has started the vaccination campaign against herpes zoster for the at-risk population, which will be provided in the city’s health centers in the coming weeks. Herpes is a disabling disease, very painful and difficult to treat, which can be prevented with the vaccine, prescribed for the population born in 1943, 1944, 1958 and 1959 and which will be provided in the two health centers.
At the Villena 1 Health Center, it is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., and on Fridays, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. At Health Center 2, in addition to sending SMS messages, it will be attended on Fridays from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The nurse from the Elda Health Department, Alejandro Cremades, explained that the effect of the herpes vaccine is 90% effective and throughout Spain no serious cases of side effects from the vaccine have been detected. This disease occurs in those people who have suffered chickenpox and manifests itself when there is a lowering of the defenses, which generally occurs in elderly people.
Villena registered 120 cases of herpes zoster during 2023, according to Cremades, of which in six cases they could have been vaccinated to prevent the disease. “It is necessary to raise awareness about the need to extend vaccination among the population that turns 65 and 80 years old, since half of the population that could receive the preventive dose,” she commented.
