With this lid, you’ll never again have to smell spoiled food and wonder whether it’s worth eating stale food or throwing it away.
Berlin startup presented Vorkoster. This is a smart lid that helps you understand whether the food in the container is fresh or not.
Everything is arranged simply. A special pH-sensitive film consisting of algae and coated with a special dye is built into the lid. When the food in the plate or container has spoiled, the lid changes color from light green to bright purple.
It’s like a neon sign for your products. The lid seems to say, “Eat it now!” or “Better throw it away.”

When most foods containing meat or fish begin to spoil, they release ammonia gas. This is what the lid reacts to. The creators of the gadget also highlight its versatility: the lid can be used to cover any plates, pots, pans and containers and put them in the refrigerator.
Vorkosters are made from recyclable plastic and 3D printed. Now the authors of the project are testing the covers to make sure that the display works perfectly. It is expected that these gadgets will go on sale in the next two years, but their estimated cost has not yet been disclosed.
