Germany Faces Longest Train Drivers’ Strike Yet, Paralyzing Rail Transport

It is supposed to be the longest strike yet, it will last through the weekend.

Germany is facing a second train drivers’ strike in January, which will once again paralyze rail transport throughout the country for several days. Just three days after a new offer from Deutsche Bahn management, the GDL union has announced that it will go on an even longer strike this week than last.

“DB’s third and allegedly improved offer showed that the firm was undeterred in continuing its previous course of refusal and confrontation and was not seeking to reach an agreement,“ GDL said in a statement.

The freight strike will begin on Tuesday, January 23 at 6 p.m. DB train drivers and infrastructure employees who are members of the GDL will join her from 2:00 on Wednesday. The protest will not end until Monday, January 29 at 6 p.m. German railways have never experienced such a long strike.

GDL is to explain the next steps at today’s press conference. Traditionally, the strike will also affect connections to the Czech Republic.

In its latest announcement on Friday, DB said it was willing to cut weekly working hours by an hour and increase wages by 13%. But the trade unionists demand more.
