Óscar Gutiérrez Detained with Million Dollars in Santa Cruz: Latest Updates

The judge on duty ordered 120 days of preventive detention in the Palmasola prison in Santa Cruz for Óscar Gutiérrez, the man identified as the owner of the million dollars that Transit police stole in a routine operation, Unitel reported.

The man arrived at the Palace of Justice this Saturday to undergo a hearing on precautionary measures.

The union’s legal defense appealed the resolution. Minutes after 1:00 p.m. the man was removed from the court so that the judicial determination could be carried out.

After being apprehended after his voluntary presentation at police offices, Gutiérrez arrived at the courts in the middle of a reinforced police operation.

The man, in the first instance, admitted that he was the owner of the money, but before entering the courts he stated that the large amount of American bills belonged to his nephew.

“The owner of the million dollars turns out to be his nephew and that money comes from other businesses. (…) These are pyramid payments and loans, you are going to have access to the statements,” said Franklin Lobo, the union’s lawyer.

He is accused of the crime of legitimizing illicit profits. According to the first data of the investigations, the man could not prove the origin of the money that, according to national authorities, is linked to drug trafficking.

In an interview with Unitel, his lawyer argued that the arrested person did not show up to report the incident out of fear. He said that after receiving counseling he finally went to police facilities on Friday. “He (when referring to his client) has clearly stated that he is the owner of the money,” the jurist confirmed.
