Forum for Democracy has established a Flemish department in Belgium. The founding meeting was held in Genk tonight, where new members and candidates for the list were recruited. The Flemish branch also wants to participate in the elections for the European Parliament.
According to FvD, this is the first time that a Dutch political party has set up a department abroad. Party leader Baudet thinks he can win seats in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. “It is extremely important that our story is also heard in Flanders,” he said in Genk.
Baudet referred according to the Belgian news agency Belga several times to the Netherlands and Belgium as the Northern and Southern Netherlands respectively. “We are part of the same nation, we started the same movement 600 years ago. It is strange that Flanders is part of Belgium.”
The Forum app will also be available in Flanders. That is according to the website an opportunity to “find like-minded people in your region and get in touch with other FvD members”.
Baudet is also the chairman of the FvD Flanders. He says that there are no plans for the time being to establish more foreign departments.
Hungary
FvD now has one representative in the European Parliament. The elections are in June. One faction in the European parliament can be formed with any elected Flemish Forum parliamentarians.
Baudet says that he is also talking to “partners” in Hungary about forming a new faction. He does not say which partners these are.
