Usually, the body does not show any symptoms indicating high levels of cholesterol in the blood, so high cholesterol is called the “hidden killer or silent killer” due to the absence of symptoms. However, some physical changes have been associated with high levels of cholesterol in the blood.

A strange sign of high blood cholesterol
A study conducted in 2020 and published in the journal Laryngscope showed a link between high cholesterol levels and the perception of unpleasant phantom odors. This condition is known as “phantosmia,” which is a specific defect in the sense of smell.

It was conducted on a group of adults with stroke, congestive heart failure, angina, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol in the United States of America from 20211 to 2014.
The results of the study were as follows:
– 76% of stroke patients reported being aware of unpleasant phantom odors, which is the largest percentage in the study.
Patients with congestive heart failure and angina pectoris reported perceiving unpleasant phantom odors up to three times as often and 2.8 times as likely as adults to perceive unpleasant phantom odors among adults 40 to 59 years of age and 60 years of age and older.
– People with high cholesterol reported unpleasant phantom odors more frequently than those without high cholesterol.
In their study, the researchers concluded that “stroke, angina, congestive heart failure, well-controlled high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol are associated with phantom odor perception.”
How to lower high levels
The best way to stave off the complications of high cholesterol is to monitor your cholesterol levels. Eating a healthy, balanced diet can provide a buffer against high blood cholesterol levels.
The NHS says: “To reduce blood cholesterol, try to reduce your intake of fatty foods, especially foods containing a type of fat called saturated fat.”
