Survey Reveals Main Trends in Video Game Industry: Layoffs, Engine Usage, Accessibility, and More

The organizers of the Game Developers Conference, together with the analytical agency Omdia, conducted a survey of three thousand video game developers to identify the main trends in the industry. Here are the results they got:

  • 35% of respondents experienced layoffs over the past year, of which 7% were fired themselves, and the rest witnessed the layoffs of colleagues or acquaintances

  • Testers and quality control department employees suffered the most from layoffs (22% of respondents were fired). The least likely are business and finance specialists (2% of respondents were fired)

  • 56% of developers are worried that they will be laid off in the near future

  • 33% of developers use Unreal Engine or Unity when creating games. Curiously, the same number of respondents (33%) are planning to change or have already changed the engine

  • While 48% of respondents said their companies have implemented accessibility measures into their current projects, 27% said their companies have not implemented any of these features. The most popular accessibility features are optional subtitles, colorblind mode, content warnings, and modes for people with phobias

  • 76% use Twitter/X, with 97% of them expressing a negative opinion of the social network and its owner Elon Musk

  • 26% of AAA developers have games adapted into films or TV series

  • Young developers are 157% more likely to support unionization than their older colleagues
