Almost all of IJmuiden has been designated as a safety risk area. This means that from Monday the police there will have far-reaching powers, such as searching people on the street without there being a direct reason to do so at that time. The reason for the decision is the persistent drug violence in the port city.
Mayor Dales of the municipality of Velsen, which includes IJmuiden, says he is very concerned. For example, a total of thirty violent incidents involving weapons or explosives took place in the past three months, the mayor writes in a letter to the city council. Several homes were also closed by order of the mayor because they were the target of criminals. Dales says there is “a serious fear of a disruption of public order”.
Camera surveillance
According to Dales, measures such as camera surveillance, which the municipality implemented at the end of last month, had only limited effect. “Incidents of violence involving weapons continue to occur,” he wrote. There is also insufficient police capacity to monitor the streets and, due to the nature of their work, municipal enforcers cannot be deployed to weapons incidents.

According to Dales, residents of IJmuiden are therefore increasingly confronted with violence during the day. This increases the chance of innocent victims.
The mayor says he realizes that establishing a safety risk area is a difficult measure, but that as mayor he is responsible for safety and public order.
“I do not tolerate people walking around on the street with a weapon. It is a danger to public order, to the person carrying the weapon and to other residents.”
The measure will come into effect next Monday and last until August 1.
