The European Union is preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia on the occasion of the second anniversary of the start of its war against Ukraine, France Press reported, citing diplomats in Brussels.
The sources in question, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not give details, limiting themselves to saying today that negotiations are ongoing.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
The EU’s foreign policy and security chief, Josep Borrell, “is very keen to mark the second anniversary of the attack (by Russia against Ukraine) with a package of sanctions aimed mainly at individuals and legal entities,” one of the diplomats said.
The Baltic republics and Poland are among the most ardent supporters of the idea of imposing punitive measures against the Russian nuclear sector and liquefied gas. However, other EU member states do not view this proposal so favorably, AFP notes.
At the beginning of last month, the 27 already adopted a 12th package of sanctions against Russia, which bans the import of diamonds, a sector that provides the country with revenues of between 4 and 5 billion dollars a year. In addition, they are considering, in coordination with the G-7 countries, ways to use frozen Russian assets worth about 300 million dollars, the agency also stated, quoted by BTA on Friday.
