During the carnival event, which takes place from February 11 to 13, there is a total ban on drones. A special team of the federal police will ensure that the ban is observed. In the event that the police drones detect other drones, they will disrupt their signal and take control of the aircraft. If the threat is too great, the police drone will shoot a net over the illegal drone.
The decision came at the request of the Aalst security cell. “International conflicts are monitored by our security cell. This is also necessary because Aalst Carnival is one of the largest open-air events in Flanders,” says Mayor Christoph D’Haese.
Jürgen Dhaene, chief of police of the Aalst police zone, also emphasizes that the event must be as safe as possible. “This will be done with concrete blocks, extra patrols, special assistance teams and camera systems. Due to today’s evolution, with drones and technology from China and other countries, we as police have to think about how we can protect ourselves,” he said.
According to Dhaene, it is also very important to take the geopolitical situation into account. “Then I refer to Ukraine, Israel and Palestine. There have already been demonstrations for Palestine in Aalst and we also have Russian and Ukrainian citizens living here,” said the police chief.
