There are films that hit cinemas like a wave. And there are films that go down without a sound. You can watch one of these representatives stream on-demand.
With the film adaptation of young adult books, Hollywood has discovered a gap in the market, which caused the box office to ring with the “Twilight” originals or the “The Hunger Games” books. Thanks to several sequels and a real hype surrounding the fan favorites, producers and studios enjoyed the exciting stories for years – and millions in revenue. But not every adaptation of a novel for the young target group is successful. Director J Blakeson (“I Care a Lot”) raised his vision of the young adult book “The 5th Wave” considerably and was lost when it was released in January 2016. The sci-fi film runs on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 8:15 p.m. on VOX. Alternatively, the film is available as a subscription Netflix or on Amazon Prime as an on-demand offer for everyone who passed by the film with Chloë Grace Moretz (“Periphery”) and Nick Robinson (“Love, Simon”).
Millions of dollars in budget, but no people in the audience: “The 5th Wave” is not the only production that failed at the box office. We have put together further examples for you in our video.
What is “The 5th Wave” about?
Everything started like an ordinary day. But for young Cassie (Chloë Grace Moretz), this day will be the beginning of the earth’s demise. An alien invasion has begun on the planet, which is increasingly wiping out humanity in various phases. No electricity, natural disasters, plagues, and the takeover of human bodies were just the beginning. But the fifth wave is still to come. In order to defend herself against the alien enemies, Cassie reluctantly joins the inscrutable Commander Vosch (Liev Schreiber), who trains young people to become fighters. However, more important to Cassie is finding her brother Sammy (Zackary Arthur), who disappeared in the doomsday chaos. Survive or save her brother? Cassie has little time until the next invasion phase.
Is a sequel planned for “The 5th Wave”?
Although “The 5th Wave” was obviously designed for another part with an open ending, there will be no sequel. With box office takings of $110 million against a production budget of $88 million, the chance of a part 2 is slim. Since 2016, there has been no further information from the producing studio Sony about new plans to give the franchise a second chance. So the cliffhanger leaves a bad aftertaste that you should just see for yourself.
