In addition to fat loss, a stomach reduction also leads to significant loss of muscle mass. That loss can amount to more than a third of the total weight loss. This is evident from PhD research by Malou Nuijten at the physiology department of Radboud university medical center.
In addition to fat loss, a stomach reduction also leads to significant loss of muscle mass. That loss can amount to more than a third of the total weight loss. This is evident from PhD research by Malou Nuijten at the physiology department of Radboud university medical center.
An international literature study she conducted showed that patients who undergo gastric reduction lose an average of eight to ten kilos of muscle within one year, especially in the first three months after the procedure. A group of 3569 Dutch bariatric patients who were followed for three years also showed the greatest muscle loss within three to six months. The first months after surgery are therefore crucial to prevent excessive muscle loss (losing a relatively large amount of muscle mass compared to fat within the total weight loss). says Nuijten.
The muscle loss is greater than in people who lose weight with a regular diet. The excessive loss occurred mainly in men, the elderly, people with a higher BMI prior to surgery and in patients who underwent gastric sleeve surgery.
Nuijten also looked at the extent to which patients suffered acute heart problems or death after gastric reduction. She sees a higher risk of this in patients over 45 years of age with excessive muscle loss (where the muscle loss was thirty or more percent of the total weight loss).
Nuijten notes that after bariatric surgery, attention should not only be paid to sufficient protein in the diet and more exercise. More attention should also be paid to the ratio of muscle and fat loss, instead of just focusing on the absolute total weight loss.
