Polio Immunization Campaign Targets 106,000 Children in Pamekasan Regency, East Java

A total of 106 thousand children in Pamekasan Regency, East Java were targeted for polio immunization, the implementation of which started from January 15 2024 to February 25 2024.

Acting Regent of Pamekasan Masrukin in Pamekasan, East Java, Friday said that the 106 thousand children who were targeted for polio immunization were spread across 178 villages and 11 sub-districts in 13 sub-districts throughout Pamekasan Regency.

“The target we want to achieve from this total target is at least 95 percent, so that in this way, children’s immunity to various types of diseases can be achieved, because polio immunization is actually an effort to build body immunity,” he said.

Therefore, continued the regent, to realize this minimum target, his party involved the active role of all parties, including the government, security forces, community leaders and posyandu cadres spread across all villages and sub-districts throughout Pamekasan Regency.

According to him, this immunization, in the form of a drop vaccine, targets children between the ages of zero and eight years with two stages of vaccination.

This effort is important, because polio is an infectious disease that is transmitted orally and ingested through feces, and early prevention is really needed as an anticipatory measure.

Acting Regent Masrukin further revealed that since 2014 Indonesia has succeeded in receiving a polio-free certificate together with WHO member countries in the South East Asia Region (SEARO).

This effort, he continued, came after the government, through the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, carried out a long struggle for various immunization programs which were promoted and continue to this day.

Indonesia’s freedom from polio does not mean that this virus has disappeared from the face of the earth. So far, children are still safe because they have a complete immunization shield, so that the body’s immunity is formed.

“Therefore, complete immunization must be carried out, and healthy living behavior must be taught to children from an early age,” said Masrukin.

The number one person in the Pamekasan Regency Government further explained that in December 2023 two positive cases of polio were found and one case in January 2024. This finding was quite surprising because previously, Indonesia had been declared safe from polio cases.

Due to this extraordinary incident (KLB), the government took strategic steps to prevent it through Sub PIN Polio activities which were held simultaneously starting today in Yogyakarta, Central Java and East Java.

“For Pamekasan as in other districts/cities, polio immunization is intended for children under eight years of age with two polio drops administered, namely in January and February 2024,” he explained.

The first session will be from 15 to 21 January 2024 and the second session will be from 19 to 25 February 2024 at all designated posyandu, health centers and schools.
