Shafaq News/ Fears are mounting about the spread of the new mutant of the Coronavirus (1.JN) in Iraq after cases of infection were recorded in a number of countries in the region, amid calls for the necessity of following health instructions to prevent the new mutant.
The Iraqi Ministry of Health had tightened preventive measures with the outbreak of the new variant of Corona in a number of countries, including wearing masks in crowded areas and maintaining a safe distance from others.
A document issued by the Ministry of Health, received by Shafaq News Agency, revealed that in light of the World Health Organization’s announcement of the new mutant of the Coronavirus (1.JN) and the recording of cases of infection with the new mutant in a number of countries in the region, in this regard, we include below the following recommendations:
1 – Follow up on Covid-19 tests using PCR technology in all health departments and follow up on genetic developments in the Central Public Health Laboratory.
2 – The obligation of medical and health personnel working in health institutions to wear masks and other personal protective equipment when dealing with confirmed or suspected cases of Covid-19.
3- Health awareness about taking the necessary measures to prevent infection by wearing masks in crowded, closed or poorly ventilated areas, maintaining a safe distance from others as much as possible, vaccination against Covid-19 and influenza, especially groups at risk of severe infection, and covering the mouth and nose. When coughing and sneezing, clean your hands regularly.
Parliamentary hosting to follow instructions
The Parliamentary Health Committee intends to host the Public Health Department in the Ministry of Health to follow up on the instructions sent to the departments, according to committee member Bassem Al-Gharabi, who confirms that “the protocols and instructions are good, but most of the departments in the governorates do not have full commitment and are not sensitive to the progress of the disease.”
Al-Gharabi added to Shafaq News Agency, “Therefore, upon hosting, we will be asked to form field teams from the Ministry of Health to visit health institutions, especially public health departments, to activate the necessary instructions, in light of the spread of the new mutant in countries of the world.”
The representative believes that “Iraq is in the danger zone, especially since health institutions and infrastructure are dilapidated, accompanied by a weakness in health culture and awareness about the mutant in areas far from the centres, and sometimes there is an illusion between severe influenza and the new mutant.”
He confirms, “The spread is not at a frightening level and no epidemic has been recorded yet, but rather some individual cases, and if it spreads and the situation requires a closure, it will be closed, but for now the street must not raise fears, because the closure has economic repercussions, and this matter depends on the increase in infections and control.” on her”.
He continues, “Therefore, these matters will be emphasized in the hosting, especially with the spread of other diseases, including the measles epidemic among children in schools, which also raises the alarm.”
Corona infections rise in the world
On December 23, the World Health Organization announced that the number of Covid-19 infections (Corona) around the world had increased by 52% in 28 days compared to the previous 28 days.
The World Health Organization said in a report that during this same period, 850,000 new cases of infection were reported.
She added in her report: “Globally, the number of new cases increased by 52% during the 28-day period from November 20 to December 17.
Earlier, the organization announced that the new Corona virus has adapted to humans, yet it continues to mutate.
Symptoms and prevention
For his part, family medicine consultant, Dr. Ali Abu Tahin, says, “The Corona virus changes itself from time to time, and mutations occur in it, and the latest mutation, called (1.JN), derived from the Omicron mutant, began to spread, recording more than 60 percent of infections.” In countries of the world, including Iraq.
Abu Tahin points out during his talk to Shafaq News Agency, “The new variant is difficult to distinguish from regular influenza, as it shares the previous symptoms of Corona, including headache, pain, runny nose, cough, burning in the pharynx, and other symptoms, and not all of them necessarily appear on the patient, and the diagnosis is made through Swab and PCR examination to determine infection with Corona or another disease.
Regarding prevention methods, the doctor explains, “Prevention methods are the same as those used for Corona in the past, including general hygiene, washing hands, wearing a mask, social distancing, avoiding crowded places, improving immunity, and healthy food.”
Abu Tahin reassures that, “The new mutant is not very lethal, but rather it is highly contagious, and there is no noticeable increase in hospitalizations, but rather just injuries, most of which are mild, but caution and caution are necessary.”
Regarding the people most vulnerable to severe infections, the doctor explains that they are “the elderly who have chronic diseases, and patients with asthma and allergies, and the vaccine can reduce the severity of the infection, whether the Corona vaccine itself or the influenza vaccine, which enhances and strengthens the body’s immunity.”
At the conclusion of his speech, Abu Tahin notes, “The new mutant does not need severe treatments, but rather just rest, a pain reliever, a fever reducer, and other simple things that are sufficient for treatment, and all of them are available.”
A call to wear masks and get vaccinated
On January 5, the Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Ghebreyesus, urged wearing masks and vaccination against the Coronavirus (Covid-19), after recording a rise in infection cases for weeks in many countries.
“The number of respiratory illnesses caused by COVID-19, influenza and other pathogens has been rising in many countries for several weeks and is expected to continue beyond the recent holidays,” Tedros wrote on his social media page.
He called on everyone to take a coronavirus (Covid-19) test and seek medical care when necessary.
The head of the World Health Organization added: “Continue to use masks, ventilation and distancing to reduce infections.”
He also called on countries to ensure access to tests and vaccines and maintain continuous COVID-19 sequencing to track the evolution of mutations.
