Former US President Donald Trump on Thursday demanded “blanket” presidential immunity from criminal prosecution, even if his actions crossed “the limits.”
Trump is running for the next presidential election in November while facing 91 criminal charges in four separate cases, including seeking to overturn his loss in the 2020 election and illegally possessing classified documents at his private golf club.
He wrote in a post on social media that he published around 2 a.m. that as a former president he enjoyed complete immunity from prosecution, and urged the Supreme Court to issue a ruling in his favor.
Trump added on his platform, “Truth Social,” that “even events that (cross borders) should be subject to complete immunity,” and that it should not take years “trying to distinguish between good and bad.”
He pointed out that US presidents need immunity to be able to make difficult decisions, and this need outweighs the risk of them violating the rules.
By a comfortable margin.. Trump wins the Republican nomination in Iowa
The former Republican president likened the situation to a police force that must continue to work despite the occasional transgressions of “rogue” individuals.
He considered that the Supreme Court, which leans toward the right wing since he appointed three judges to it during his presidential term, would make an “easy decision.”
A federal appeals court in Washington is currently considering Trump’s claim for immunity from prosecution for seeking to change the results of the 2020 elections, which Democrat Joe Biden won.
If Trump’s appeal is rejected, as most legal experts expect, the case will likely be referred to the Supreme Court for a final decision.
