Salmonella Infections Linked to Recalled Charcuterie Meats Double: CDC Issues Expanded Warning
In a concerning turn of events, the number of salmonella infections linked to recalled charcuterie meats has doubled, prompting the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue an expanded warning. This new food safety alert comes as the CDC reports a total of 47 reported illnesses, including 10 hospitalizations, across 22 states. The affected states include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
This recent update reveals a significant increase in cases compared to the previous report on January 5th. At that time, there were 24 illnesses and five hospitalizations reported in just 14 states. However, it is important to note that the CDC believes the actual number of illnesses could be higher and may extend to other states as well.
To address this growing concern, the CDC has expanded its warning beyond one specific lot number of Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler. The caution now includes any lot of the following products sold in twin-packs: Busseto brand Charcuterie Sample sold at Sam’s Club and Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta sold at Costco.
While investigations are still ongoing, the CDC advises individuals to discard any of these products immediately. Additionally, it is recommended to use hot, soapy water or a dishwasher to clean surfaces and containers that may have come into contact with the recalled items.
At present, it remains unclear whether any additional products may be contaminated. Fratelli Beretta had previously recalled over 11,000 pounds of charcuterie meat products earlier this month but limited it to only one specific lot code.
If anyone experiences symptoms such as diarrhea and a fever of 102 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, three or more days of diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, vomiting that prevents the consumption of liquids, or signs of dehydration such as decreased urination, dry mouth and throat, or dizziness upon standing, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
Typically, salmonella symptoms manifest within six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria. Most individuals recover without treatment within four to seven days. However, it is important to note that young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness.
