Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he has informed the United States that he opposes the creation of a Palestinian state in any post-war scenario.
The Jan. 18 announcement exposes deep divisions between the allies, who have remained at odds during Israel’s three-month war against Hamas militants in Gaza.
The US called on Israel to scale back its offensive and said the creation of a Palestinian state must be part of “the day after tomorrow”.
In a news conference broadcast nationwide, Netanyahu vowed to continue the offensive until Israel achieves a “decisive victory over Hamas.” He also rejected the idea of Palestinian statehood and said he had made his case to the Americans.
“In any future agreement … Israel needs security control over all territory west of the Jordan,” Netanyahu said. “This goes against the idea of sovereignty. What can you do?” “The Prime Minister must be able to say no to our friends,” he added.
