Stolen Car Found 26 Years Later in Spain: Woman Threatened with Fine for Refusing to Collect it

One late summer day in 1997, Emi Carrasco went to a beach in Catalonia, Spain with her nephew and husband, Manolo.

While the trio were swimming and enjoying themselves, Emi’s car – an Opel Kadett – was stolen from the car park.

Emi reported the car stolen immediately, but the vehicle had sunk into the ground.

Now, 26 years later, it has appeared.

Threatened with a fine

– This is completely insane. At first I thought it was bullshit!

This is what Emi, who is originally French, tells the news media Catalan Corporation. She was speechless when the Spanish police called a few days ago to say the car had been found.

But what caused the most attention was that the police threatened to fine her if she did not come and collect it:

– They said that I had to transport the car away from the site on my own, and that I would have to pay dearly if I didn’t do it. I didn’t understand anything, says Emi further.

However, Emi was quick to say that the car had been reported stolen two decades ago, which the police had not caught on to. The local police station then confirmed the report a short time later – and removed the car without any problems.

Dumped

The stolen car was found upside down in a marsh in Riudecanyes, 30 kilometers away from the beach Emi and her family were on in 1997. At that time there was a body of water at the place in question, which today has dried up.

– The theory is that the thief stole the car and dumped it in the water that was once here, says a police spokesman to Ladepeche warns.

Avisa writes that Emi and her husband Manolo – who is still married – went to the marsh to examine the car.

There they found some clothes, the nephew’s forgotten slippers and a couple of papers lying in the back seat which had been there since 5 August 1997.

– We were very fond of that car, and have many good memories of it, so it was very special to find it again, says Emi to Ladepeche.

She confirms to the newspaper that the Opel Kadett has now been removed by the police, and that the case is closed.
