The Asian U20 Men’s Volleyball Championship was originally scheduled to be held at the Tianmu Stadium in Taipei in July this year. Unexpectedly, it was recently reported that due to objections from the mainland, the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) decided to cancel Taiwan’s hosting rights after holding an online meeting and instead let Indonesia take over. . In response, the Chinese Volleyball Association said today (17th) that it respects the resolution of the Asian Volleyball Federation, but still deeply regrets the decision; the Sports Administration also issued a 4-point statement earlier in response.
Huang Guoguang, Secretary-General of the Volleyball Association of the Republic of China, said that on December 18 last year, the Asian Volleyball Confederation (Aisa Volleyball Confederation) approved the association to host the “22nd Asian U20 Men’s Volleyball Championship in 2024”. Unexpectedly, the Chinese Volleyball Association suddenly raised objections to this event in writing to the Asian Volleyball Federation on December 26, 2012.
Huang Guoguang revealed that China’s reason was that “cross-strait political relations are complicated and the Chinese Volleyball Association cannot send a team to compete. In addition, this event is related to the qualifications for the 2025 World U21 Men’s Championship. I hope the Asian Volleyball Federation can reconsider.” On December 28, a letter was sent to the Asian Volleyball Federation expressing its willingness to host this event. Therefore, the Asian Volleyball Federation held an interim council meeting on January 15 to discuss and resolve the matter.
In response to this issue, a representative of the Chinese Volleyball Association raised objections at the meeting, emphasizing that “the Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association has assisted in organizing various Asian events for many years and has been widely praised by Asian countries. For this event this year, it has not only followed the Olympic model and cooperated with various The unit is coordinating relevant matters, and the relevant funds, venues, manpower and material resources have been fully prepared. We will certainly welcome all Asian countries to participate in the event.”
Unfortunately, the final meeting still decided that the Asian Volleyball Federation recognized the Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association’s years of dedication, and also deeply regretted this situation; therefore, it was decided that the Indonesian Volleyball Association would host the 22nd Asian U20 Men’s Volleyball in 2024. championship. Huang Guoguang said that the Chinese Volleyball Association respects the decision of the Asian Volleyball Federation, but still deeply regrets this decision.
On the other hand, the Sports Administration’s 4-point statement is as follows:
1. The Sports Administration deeply regrets that the Asian Volleyball Federation (hereinafter referred to as the Asian Volleyball Federation) has changed the event originally scheduled to be held in China to Indonesia, especially since the Chinese Volleyball Association received the hosting rights 112 years ago and has invested considerable manpower and Funding preparations began.
2. It is reported that the Chinese Volleyball Association told the Asian Volleyball Federation that this event is being held in our country and China will not be able to send a team to participate due to political factors. This is its internal policy and has nothing to do with us. In particular, our country has hosted various international competitions over the years. There are no difficulties or restrictions for Chinese teams to come to Taiwan to compete. The Sports Administration and relevant ministries also provide project assistance and prioritize their entry matters.
3. The Sports Department guides Chinese sports groups to participate in international sports affairs. It has always prioritized ensuring that Chinese athletes participate in international events, safeguarding the rights and interests of Chinese sports groups in participating in international sports organizations, fulfilling the responsibilities of members of the international sports community, and abiding by the International Olympic Charter and The Lausanne Agreement of the Two Sessions in 1981.
4. In the future, the Sports Administration will continue to work with the Chinese Olympic Committee to provide guidance to various sports groups. If there are matters involving the rights and interests of our members, they should properly communicate and negotiate with the international sports organizations to which they belong in advance, and prepare a handling method to ensure the dignity of Taiwan and the international community.
