The prosecutor investigating last week’s dramatic attack on the studio of a public television channel was shot dead in Guayaquil, the most dangerous city in Ecuador, reported the Associated Press.
Prosecutor Cesar Suarez, who led the landmark investigation, was shot dead while driving his car, Ecuador’s Attorney General Diana Salazar said.
“Organized criminal groups, criminals, terrorists will not refuse us to serve society,” she pointed out in a video address on the X social network.
Thirteen alleged perpetrators were arrested in connection with the attack on the TV channel Te Se, which was carried out live and prompted President Daniel Noboa to declare that Ecuador was in a state of “internal armed conflict” amid a wave of murders and other drug-trafficking crimes sweeping the Latin American country.
Suarez was supervising prosecutor and under the case “Metastasis” against an Ecuadorian drug lord who allegedly received favorable treatment from judges, prosecutors, police and high-ranking officials.
Ecuadorian police said they were working to find those responsible for Suarez’s murder.
