Public Transport Protest in Sofia: Drivers Demand 30% Pay Rise and Traffic Disruptions Expected

Public transport protest in Sofia today, where will traffic be difficult?

Drivers want a 30% pay rise

Workers in the Metropolitan City Transport are protesting this morning. The action was organized by the Federation of Transport Trade Unions at KNSB, and the main demand is for a 30% increase in wages.

Traffic will be partially halted while a decision is made as to whether to proceed with strike action. It is expected that there will also be a meeting with the mayor Vasil Terziev.

The protest of public transport workers may make traffic in Sofia difficult. It will be held in Druzhba district at the last stop of trolley lines 4 and buses 88, 204, 304, 384.

The protest will start at 8:00 a.m. The movement of the indicated lines will be difficult, and it is possible that they will stop.

“From March 1, at the latest, there should be an increase in salaries or the other option – at the earliest after the adoption of the budget of Sofia. People are expecting their increases and the tension in the companies is growing,” the Federation said.

Last week, the transport federations of the KNSB and the Confederation of Labor “Support” asked the mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev, to urgently convene a Council for Asocial Cooperation in Transport, in which the managements of the four municipal companies – Metropolitan Motor Transport, Metropolitan Electric Transport, Center for urban mobility and the Metropolitan.

Public transport is struggling to retain people because of more competitive wages elsewhere, leading to huge turnover and a build-up of overtime, the transport federation says. For 2023, it has reached over 500 thousand hours.

Drivers in the various transports start with salaries between BGN 1,200 and BGN 1,800, and currently over 400 people are wanted. Higher wages are due to seniority and overtime.

The lack of personnel – drivers, engineering staff, mechanics, service and cleaning staff will only lead to overtired employees and an increase in accidents and breakdowns in the sector, they warn.
