Arnold Schwarzenegger Violates Customs Regulations with Exclusive Watch: Details & Reaction

Usually this only happens to him in the movies. Famous Hollywood film actor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday, January 17, was stopped for inspection at Munich Airport. Customs spokesman Thomas Meister confirmed this in a conversation with DW. According to him, it was a routine check. As a result, it turned out that Arnold Schwarzenegger violated customs regulations.

The Germans did not offer discounts for VIPs. For registration, the Hollywood actor had to spend more than two and a half hours at the airport, although formally there was no talk of detention, customs officials emphasized. “At about half past five in the evening he left the building,” Thomas Meister told DW, declining to provide further details about the violation.

Exclusive Arnold watches

According to the dpa agency, Arnold Schwarzenegger, having arrived in the Bavarian capital on a flight from Los Angeles, did not declare his expensive watch, although it was supposed to find a new owner in the European Union. In this case, attempting to import them duty-free is a violation. “If the goods remain in the EU, taxes and duties must be paid. This applies to everyone,” said a customs representative.

The Bild newspaper published a photo of Schwarzenegger at customs. In the photo, he is wearing glasses, a black jacket with an American flag on the sleeve and a California flag on the chest. He is holding a large gray box with a watch and a handwritten note attached: “For Austria. Arnold will bring with him.” According to the newspaper, chronograph is unique, since the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Audemars Piguet released it in a single copy special for “Iron Arnie”. The official price of this particular specimen is unknown – Schwarzenegger himself allegedly named the figure at 20 thousand euros. Prices for individual models of this company reach hundreds of thousands of euros.

Charity auction

Arnold Schwarzenegger brought the watch to Europe to put it up for auction at a charity auction in Kitzbühel, Austria. This is a ski resort famous throughout Europe. The actor was born and raised in the Alpine republic and still often comes to Austria. Proceeds from the auction were supposed to go towards climate protection, which Schwarzenegger pays special attention to.

A similar charity auction was held in Kitzbühel last year. The actor brought several unique personal items, including a replica of the leather jacket he wore in Terminator 2, an autographed ski from American Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn, and a painting painted by his friend Sylvester Stallone. Proceeds from last year’s auction exceeded 1.2 million euros.

Schwarzenegger was not delighted

Customs officials do not have information about whether Schwarzenegger went straight to Austria. Representatives of the department, in a conversation with a DW correspondent, also refused to provide additional details about a possible fine facing the famous actor and ex-governor of California.

How did Schwarzenegger himself react to the inspection and the incident with violation of customs rules? “He was not delighted,” Thomas Meister, press secretary of the customs headquarters in Munich, briefly described the actor’s reaction to DW.
