The Swedish government summoned the Iranian charge d’affaires on Wednesday. The diplomat had to report after authorities learned that more Swedish citizens had been arrested in Iran. There are calls for the release of the “arbitrarily detained” people.
The Swedish Foreign Ministry reports that a man with dual Swedish and Iranian nationality was detained at the end of 2023. The reason for the arrest is not clear, it said in a statement.
Swedish EU diplomat Johan Floderus has been detained in Iran since April 2022 and is accused of conspiring with Israel. According to the European Union, he was arrested to serve as a bargaining chip. Of two Swedish-Iranian men sentenced to death in Iran, one was executed last year.
Relations between Iran and Sweden deteriorated after a Swedish court sentenced a former Iranian prison official to life in prison for his involvement in the deaths of at least five thousand dissidents in 1988. That sentence was first imposed in July 2022 and upheld on appeal in December .
Iran summoned the Swedish charge d’affaires last month in protest against the verdict. A chargé d’affaires is a diplomat who has approximately the same duties as an ambassador, but is not officially one.
