If you doubt that we Brits love both football and magic, all you have to do is look at the sales of physical games over the past 11 months or so. Ever since Hogwarts Legacy came out in February 2023, Avalanche’s title and EA’s current football games (either FIFA 23 or EA Sports FC 24) have been vying for the crown as the biggest boxing game of the week in the UK.
Aside from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom reigning supreme at the start of summer, and a few weeks in the fall when Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 battle it out for the title, it’s largely just Wizarding World and football clash, which has been the case for most of December since then, and so far, January 2024 appears to be a similar situation.
GamesIndustry The report states that EA Sports FC 24 has returned to the top spot, pushing Hogwarts Legacy to second place on the weekly leaderboard. Some believe the change is due to recent sales and promotions, with sales of football games on PlayStation consoles surging 42%.
Aside from these two physical giants, Mortal Kombat had an excellent week, with Mortal Kombat 1 in third place and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate in fourth. Then there’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder in fifth place, ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in sixth place. Eternal Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes in at No. 7, ahead of Grand Theft Auto V in No. 8 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in No. 9. It Takes Two cracks the top 10, again thanks to recent sales promotions.
While we’ll have to wait a week to see what next week will bring, one punter would suggest we’ll see either Hogwarts Legacy or EA Sports FC 24 top the list until next week when some of the big games get a chance to announce their arrival. Ahem…Tekken 8 and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
