Sun’s Death Predicted in 5 Billion Years: What It Means for Earth

The sun’s death event is predicted to occur in five billion years from now.

Still citing the same channel, the sun, together with the Solar System, is about 4.5 billion years old. This amounts to about a third of the age of the entire universe. Over the next few billion years, the sun will shine brighter.

Perhaps paradoxically, this phenomenon will ultimately result in the loss of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere, and lead to the extinction of all living things on the planet.

In the next 2.5 to 3 billion years, calculated from now, the Earth’s surface temperature will exceed the boiling point of water everywhere.

In about 4 to 5 billion years, Earth will be in worse condition than Venus is today. Most of the water is lost and the surface melts.

Eventually, the sun will evolve into a red giant star, large enough to “swallow” the Earth. Its luminosity (the total energy emitted by stars, galaxies and other celestial bodies per unit time) will increase several thousand times its current luminosity.
