Military violence, crises and anti-Semitism: Székesfehérvár between the two world wars

The first historical performance of the year in the Public Life Club began on Wednesday, January 17 at 5 p.m. The historian guided the audience back to the 1800s.

There was talk of the happy times of peace, as a result of which the massification started: mass communication, mass production, mass sports and mass culture. He then elaborated on the First World War and its consequences.

He considered the situation in Székesfehérvár after the war as the period when military violence reached significant proportions. As he said, no one helped the returning soldiers to get back into civilian life, even though it would have been much needed. The years spent in the war and the continuous aggression took a toll on them and they could not return to society overnight.

But the Romanian occupation, which lasted from August to October 1919, also caused great alarm in the people. They ransacked houses and stole people’s valuables. In Székesfehérvár, 12 million forints worth of damage was caused.

Zsuzsa Táborosi said about the periods that followed, crises followed one another, an economic and refugee crisis emerged, which was followed by anti-Semitism.

The full version of what was said at the lecture can be viewed on the social page of the Tarsoly Youth Association.
