Two NYPD officers responding to a domestic violence call suffered gunshot wounds in a confrontation with ex-convict Melvin Butler yesterday afternoon in Brooklyn.
A call to 911 a mother who said she was being attacked by her adult son led officers to an apartment on Bergen St. near Saratoga Ave. in Brownsville shortly after 3 p.m., according to police. The unidentified officers suffered gunshot wounds, but were reported in stable condition. At least one of them returned fire and It hit the 39-year-old suspect in the stomach and leg.
The event occurred on the eve of the 2nd anniversary of the death of two young Hispanic police officers, Wilbert Mora and Jason Rivera, shot in a similar case while responding to a case of domestic violence in Harlem on January 21, 2022 and to whom the President Joe Biden declared “heroes.”

Butler’s criminal record includes a February 2023 charge for another domestic violence incident, the police said. Previously He spent 15 years in prison accused of attempted murder in 2004 and was currently wearing a monitoring bracelet on his ankle, sources said.
