What you should know
- Temperatures in the tri-state area dropped to dangerous levels that froze several areas early Wednesday morning. Some schools delayed the start of classes due to icy conditions on roads and sidewalks.
- There is also a chance for more light snow on Friday. It is expected to be similar to the storm from earlier in the week, with an overall drop of 1 to 3 inches across the three states.
- The coldest air since last February arrives this weekend behind that storm system, and temperatures are not expected to rise above the freezing mark until Monday.
The coldest air felt in the tri-state area since February 2023 returns later this week after another wintry system possibly arrives that could leave more snow accumulation in parts of the region. A dangerous cold that began to be felt on Wednesday morning, many sidewalks and roads were icy.
Friday’s possible snowfall is expected to produce between 1 and 3 inches of snow in the tri-state area, similar to the recent storm that ended the 701-day snow drought in Central Park.

What to expect in the coming days
Wednesday remains calm, albeit freezing temperatures, with an expected high of just 26 degrees for the day. It will be a few days like this, and those temperatures are dangerous with prolonged exposure.
Temperatures rise slightly toward the freezing mark Thursday as a coastal low develops off the Carolinas. At this time, we expect a light accumulation of snow Thursday into Friday, although projections could change.
That approaching system will bring snow and behind it the coldest air since last February. Saturday will be the coldest day, with wind chills in the single digits. Expect more of the same on Sunday.
We get above freezing again on Monday and then thaw. At least we can see a finish line.
