The 2027 Pan American Games still do not have an official venue, after they were withdrawn from Colombia due to breach of contract with Panam Sports for the payment of organizing rights.
The national government is trying everything to recover the jousts and the former mayor of Barranquilla, Jaime Pumarejo, used a new bullet.
Through an official letter to the president of Panam Sports, Pumarejo asked the Pan American institution to return the headquarters of the games to the Arenosa. In the document, the previous president of the capital of the Atlantic recognized the mistakes that the Government made and emphasized that the city has the necessary infrastructure to carry out the jousts:
“Today, as another Barranquilla resident, and with the aim of sharing my point of view, I celebrate the action of the President of the Republic to recognize the errors and state that he has the resources and the will to immediately comply with the agreed commitments. with Panam Sports. Furthermore, the fairs would be in excellent hands, since Alejandro Char, again Mayor of Barranquilla, was the one who executed the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.
Apart from giving the reasons with which he hopes that Panam will return the games to Colombia, Pumarejo appealed to the sense of solidarity of the organizing institution, so that this event can be carried out in the country.
“I would like to appeal to your sense of brotherhood and solidarity, that which is forged through sport and your work for it. A beautiful Caribbean, Latin American, diverse city with incredible human warmth wants to welcome them and thus give wings to millions of young Colombians who will see themselves represented in our athletes. It is in their hands to return the hope to Colombia and the opportunity for our people to mend their ways, be good hosts and unite around the largest sporting event in the hemisphere.”
This letter is one of the new attempts by government entities and representatives to recover the Pan American Games. Previously, the senators and even the President of the Republic himself also tried to have rapprochements with Panam Sports.
Never in the history of the Games has Panam Sports decided to return the venue to a country
Despite the fact that the highest Colombian entities have tried from all possible fronts to re-establish talks with Panam Sports, the probability that the sports institution will return the games to Barranquilla is very low, almost zero, if one takes into account that it does not There is a precedent for returning a headquarters.
Within the initial statement presented by Panam making its decision official, they make it clear that they are making an unavoidable decision and that this comes as a result of countless non-compliance. Both arguments are strong enough for the Pan American organization to not even look at Colombia again.
In addition, to this decision are also added the official candidacies of Paraguay and Peru to host the Pan American Games, which have already been received by Panam. In the case of the Paraguayan headquarters, Asunción is the favorite city, since they have recent infrastructure for sporting events, since Asunción recently hosted the 2022 South American Games.
As for Peru, Lima is positioned as its strong option to obtain the fairs after having received them with great success in 2019, still having the spaces that were previously used available for the execution of the 2027 Games.
