The Debate on NRK: Norway’s Response to Ukraine Refugee Flow and Russia’s War

The refugee flow that has affected Europe after Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine was the subject of Tuesday’s episode of “The Debate” on NRK.

During the broadcast, it was discussed, among other things, that President Volodymyr Zelenskyj has been aware that Ukraine needs several hundred thousand new soldiers. The right-winger’s Mari Holm Lønseth was clear in her speech to combative Ukrainian men in Norway.

– I hope all the men who are in Norway now of fighting age listen to the very clear call Zelenskyj makes. He says that it is critical to win the war if you are unable to mobilize, said Holm Lønseth.

On the same topic, she also said:

– I hope that those who are mobilized for war travel and also contribute to the service, so we don’t have to introduce any measures for that.

Later in the broadcast, Holm Lønseth was also clear that Norway will accept refugees, although priority must be given to who will get help, if as many as 120,000 Ukrainians come here in 2024, as the biggest estimates have suggested.

SV: – Should be allowed to stay in Norway

SV’s Andreas Sjalg Unneland was also invited to the NRK studio at Marienlyst on Tuesday evening.

He believes Norway must do what it can to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia. If Ukraine asks for Ukrainians to be sent back, it must be considered, said Unneland.

– But the starting point for us is that those who can contribute in Ukraine should do so, but those who have protection and need protection in Norway should get it.

– Today it is everyone, so you think that no one should be sent out, asked NRK’s Nina Owing.

– We believe that the people who have come to Norway to seek safety and have fled a war should initially be allowed to stay in Norway, replied Unneland.

– We do not have the capacity for that

During the debate, NRK’s foreign correspondent Morten Jentoft said that some parts of Ukraine are relatively safe, even with the ongoing war.

The Progress Party and Storting representative Erlend Wiborg believe that priority must be given to where in Ukraine the refugees come from, when it comes to who will receive collective protection in Norway. Not everyone can be accepted.

– No. We simply do not have the capacity for that. That Norway provided collective protection from the start of the expansion of the war I believe was absolutely right and it was something the Progress Party supported. We are now in a situation where capacity has been exhausted in many municipalities.

– The Progress Party wants us to continue to help Ukrainians on the run, but then we don’t have the opportunity to accept everyone. Therefore, we believe it is now time to make a distinction between where in Ukraine you come from, so we make sure that we still have the opportunity to give those who come from the most vulnerable areas help and protection in Norway, said Wiborg.

Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) also opened the possibility that the collective protection for all Ukrainians may change, if some parts of Ukraine become safe to stay in.

– Then we have to look at whether we should provide collective protection to those who are from areas fleeing internally in Ukraine. We are now considering that. We have to come back to that, but we believe it is right to continue standing up for Ukraine and to welcome people who are on the run.

However, SV’s Andreas Sjalg Unneland warned against differentiating within the collective protection.

– I think we in Norway have shown that we can do this. It is impressive what the municipalities do and what we manage. That means we have to make some political priorities and the question is whether we are willing to spend the money it costs, he said.
