Jakarta –
Jose Mourinho fired AS Roma following a series of negative results. This decision made Roma criticized by its former coach, Fabio Capello.
Roma announced Mourinho’s dismissal on Tuesday (16/1/2024) morning local time. According to reports circulating in Italy, the dismissal of the Portuguese coach was quite sudden.
Roma owner Dan Friedkin flew from the United States to Rome to inform the players and Mourinho of this decision. Mourinho’s assistant, Salvatore Foti, arrived at Roma’s training center an hour after the sacking announcement and was reportedly on the verge of tears.
Mourinho looked sad when he left Trigoria, Roma’s training center. He stopped to meet fans but refused to answer journalists’ questions.
“It seems like these American owners have a strange way of handling things, no respect for those who work for them,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia.
“They were rude because we saw how Maldini was fired over the phone, and now they are doing the same thing with Mourinho, who was at Trigoria and was told he was no longer in charge. There is no sensitivity there, there is business.”
Capello did not expect Roma to fire Mourinho. The coach who brought Roma to the Scudetto in 2000/2001 criticized the way Roma treated Mourinho.
“I didn’t expect it, especially in this way. It’s clear that they are no longer on the same page. Mourinho has had several requests but hasn’t received an answer, and this is also a sign that something is wrong,” he said.
“I feel Mourinho is being treated like someone who has never coached, in a disrespectful way for a coach who has given a lot to world football, not just European football. This is an unconvincing attitude and I cannot accept it,” said Capello.
