The UAE chairs the “Arab Telecommunications and Information Technology” meeting in Abu Dhabi

The UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, witnessed the fifty-second meeting of the Arab Permanent Committee for Communications and Information being held on Monday for two days, under the Emirati presidency represented by Engineer Mohammed Al Ramsi, Deputy Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and the Digital Government for the Telecommunications Sector. Delegations representing Arab countries and the Technical Secretariat of the Council participated in the meeting. Arab Ministers of Communications and Information, and representatives of a number of entities and organizations that have observer status, such as the Arab Regional Office of the International Telecommunication Union.
This meeting comes in the context of the ongoing preparations for the ministerial meeting of the Council, which will be held in Abu Dhabi, January 18, 2024, preceded by a meeting of the Executive Office of the Council, today, Wednesday, under the Emirati presidency.
The meeting was opened with a speech by Al-Ramsi in which he thanked the sisterly Sultanate of Oman for its efforts in successfully hosting the 51st session of the committee. He also thanked the General Secretariat of the Arab League and the sub-groups, which paved the way for the committee’s meeting through its recommendations that formed the agenda.
Al-Ramsi said: “This meeting comes after the great success of the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-23), which was held in the UAE, between November 20 and December 15, which in itself was an Arab and Emirati success story worthy of pride.” With its active coordination and permanent consultation, the Arab team succeeded in providing dozens of joint contributions, worked as a single bloc in building bridges of dialogue, succeeded in reaching understandings and consensual solutions between regional groups, and was able at the same time to achieve many gains for the Arab region in a way general. With the support of the Arab group, the UAE succeeded in leading the conference with a capacity witnessed by everyone, and my personal experience in chairing the conference was an important witness to the influential role of Arab support and the harmonious Arab voice to serve the interests of our nation and our countries.”
Hamid Al Basti, senior official for government relations and international cooperation at the Authority, and head of the Emirati delegation participating in the meeting, pointed out the importance of the items on the agenda and said: “We have important titles that touch the aspirations of our Arab societies, and express a wise reading of reality, with its rapid changes. And renewable technologies, in large part, represent the hope of creating a qualitative shift towards the digital economy and digital government, to serve the peoples of the region.”
The meeting agenda includes a group of issues and topics related to joint Arab cooperation in the field of communications, including the results of the meetings of the working groups of the Arab Permanent Committee for Communications and Information, cybersecurity topics, the results of the World Radiocommunication Conference, the Arab Strategy for Communications and Information, and the criteria for nomination. Positions and committees in the International Telecommunication Union, and how to coordinate work between organizations working in the field of communications and information technology in the Arab region, the Arab Digital Capital 2024 initiative, and the Regional Forum for Arab Digital Content.
It is worth noting that the Permanent Arab Committee for Communications and Information emerges from the Council of Arab Ministers for Communications and Information, which represents the supreme executive body for the development of the Arab communications and information technology community. It is one of the specialized ministerial councils that operates under the umbrella of the Council of the League of Arab States. The committee holds its meetings twice a year. The year before the meetings of the Ministerial Council and the Executive Office.
